Clinical Laboratory Services
OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center Clinical Laboratory is a state-of-the-art facility that performs more than 1 million tests each year. It is part of the OSF HealthCare System Laboratory, a cooperative service effort among the six OSF HealthCare hospitals and medical centers in Illinois and Michigan.

The main clinical laboratory at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center and its satellites, the OSF Saint Anthony “A” building laboratory 5713 Strathmoor Drive, and the OSF laboratory at Southridge Immediate Care, have all been awarded the prestigious accreditation granted by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation of the College of American Pathologists (CAP). Under the direction of David S. Laib, MD, the laboratories were recognized for providing quality laboratory services.

In the letter informing OSF Saint Anthony of the accreditations, the OSF Saint Anthony laboratories were congratulated for the “excellence of the services being provided.” The OSF Saint Anthony Laboratories are part of a select group of laboratories that have been evaluated and found to be in compliance with the CAP accreditation standards—rigorous laboratory standards designed to help ensure quality patient care.

The CAP’s program is the most respected and recognized accreditation program in the world and has long been considered the ‘gold standard’ against which others are measured. Participation in the CAP accreditation process is voluntary.

In addition to maintaining the latest technology, laboratory staff is committed to the highest quality standards in the industry. It is accredited by the College of American Pathologists, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations and the American Association of Blood Banks. The laboratory is also host to an accredited, college level Clinical Laboratory Science program affiliated with Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

The laboratory staff of more than 100 includes board-certified pathologists, certified clinical laboratory scientists, certified histology technicians, certified clinical laboratory technicians, laboratory assistants, phlebotomists, clerical staff, and laboratory couriers. Staff members work in departments such as Blood Bank, Clinical Chemistry/Urinalysis, Hematology/Coagulation, Microbiology, Histology /Pathology, Specimen Processing, Phlebotomy and Outreach Services.

Providing a broad menu of tests from routine blood chemistries to more complex testing such as blood typing/cross-matching, microorganism identification and immunohistochemical staining, laboratory testing is conducted 24-hours a day. In addition to the role of serving OSF Saint Anthony, laboratory staff provides services to physician offices, clinics and extended care facilities in Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin. Staff also provide free or low-cost community health screenings throughout the region.

Loyalty and longevity are words that describe those who use the laboratory's services. Those words also describe laboratory staff members and management. Day after day and year after year, laboratory staff remains committed to the belief that caring for others is more than a job, it is our Mission.
