Trauma and Emergency Services
The dedicated and talented staff members of Trauma and Emergency Services at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center provide the highest level of care and service. In 2006, the Illinois Department of Public Health recertified us as a Level I Trauma Center and an Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics.

During the past several years, OSF Saint Anthony has experienced substantial growth in the number of people needing care in the emergency department. The department logged more than 36,000 visits last fiscal year. This growth is the reason a $5.7 million expansion and renovation project of the emergency department was completed in late 2003. The expansion includes additional exam rooms, two waiting rooms, as well as a new helicopter pad and ambulance bay. There are now separate entrances for patients brought in by emergency workers and those who are able to come on their own power or brought by a loved one.

Our emergency services are also bolstered by Lifeline. In 1981, OSF Saint Anthony established the Lifeline Helicopter Service. It was the first hospital-affiliated emergency helicopter service in Rockford and the 13th in the nation. The Lifeline helicopter and its specially trained crew assist emergency personnel throughout the region by quickly transporting patients from regional hospitals and accident scenes. In 2005, Lifeline Helicopter transported more than 650 patients from regional medical centers and accident scenes.

We serve people far wide through the OSF Northern Illinois EMS system. The system, based at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center, is comprised of almost 60 emergency medical service provider groups throughout an almost 600 square-mile area. We help ensure adequate emergency medical services are available throughout the region and coordinates the training of emergency medical technicians and paramedics. For everyone connected to the emergency department, continuing training and education are a top priority.

The Level I designation, Lifeline Helicopter Service and OSF Northern Illinois EMS System are just a few of the reasons our emergency department is one of the four Centers for Excellence at OSF Saint Anthony.
