Women's Center
Privacy, warmth, confidentiality—combined with sophisticated
and technologically advanced medical equipment—can
all be found in the new Women’s Center. Mammography,
bone density screening, Breast Cancer Risk Assessment,
ultrasound, needle localization and stereotactic breast
biopsy are all offered, but with a difference. All of the
services in the Women’s Center fulfill the three
identified priorities of providing privacy, education,
and test results as quickly as possible in a warm, comforting
atmosphere.
Its four dedicated mammography suites are designed so that
the patient can change into a specially designed gown,
walk into the adjoining room for the screening and return
to the first room, all without ever going into a hallway
or encountering anyone besides the technician. If a screening
mammogram indicates a need for a follow-up diagnostic mammogram,
our patients appreciate the fact that a Women’s Center
nurse notifies her by phone and schedules an appointment
immediately.
A special waiting room has been designed for women undergoing
diagnostic mammograms and their families. Radiologists
provide these patients with the results the same day to
help lessen the anxiety. Last year, nearly 14,000 mammograms
were performed at the Women’s Center. Women who come
for screening mammograms are reassured to know that their
films are double-read by two radiologists.
When the results of a diagnostic mammogram indicate that
further testing is needed, an appointment for a stereotactic
breast biopsy is scheduled immediately. Our patients never
have to wait more than a week for stereotactic breast biopsy,
unless at their own request, and results are provided the
day after the procedure.
The Ultrasound Department in the Women’s Center is
accredited by the American College of Radiology for ultrasound
studies in obstetrics, for ultrasound-guided interventions
in breast biopsies as well as for general use, such as
in laproscopic gallbladder surgery.
Another important service offered at the Women’s
Center is bone densitometry, which provides screening for
osteoporosis. A vital part of all services offered at the
Women’s Center is education.
