What We Do
Our cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons and cardiovascular radiologists provide a full spectrum of cardiac services. More than 15 sophisticated tests are performed by our team of cardiac specialists. Non-invasive cardiac services we provide include:

The Institute's nine interventional cardiologists practice their art in the three cardiac catheterization labs at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center. Our newest lab features the all-digital GE Innova 2000 imaging system, making it one of the most advanced catheterization labs in Illinois. A full range of diagnostic and interventional procedures are performed at OSF Saint Anthony including:

Cardiac Care Services
At the Regional Heart Institute of OSF Saint Anthony, we're used to being first. Physicians affiliated with OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center were the first in the Rockford area to perform open-heart, valve-replacement and beating heart bypass surgeries. Perhaps that is why more than 2,200 cardiac catheterization procedures and 500 open heart surgeries take place here each year. More than a dozen cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons practice their art here. We are proud of the work all of our medical staff does daily to provide the best, the most up-to-date medical treatments available in the region.

Cardiovascular Accomplishments
Innovative techniques combined with the highest quality of care have made OSF Saint Anthony a leader in cardiovascular medicine. A partial history of our accomplishments includes:

1963 Performed the first heart catheterization in Rockford.
1964 Performed the first open heart surgery in Rockford.
1970 Performed the first coronary bypass surgery in Rockford.
1981 Performed the first electrophysiology study in Rockford; began performing intracoronary streptokinase injection for treatment of acute MI.
1982 Began performing coronary angioplasty.
1985 Established the Regional Heart Institute.
1988 Performed the first implantable defibrillator procedure in Rockford.
1989 Performed aortic reconstruction surgery.
1991 Opened comprehensive cardiac catheterization center; introduced directional coronary atherectomy, excimer laser.
1992 Performed first radiofrequency ablation in Rockford.
1993 Center for Peripheral Vascular Diseases is formed.
1993 Performed first transvenous implantable cardioverter defibrillator procedure in Rockford.
1993 Performed the first iliac stent placement in Rockford.
1993 Performed the first renal artery stent placement in Rockford.
1993 Began performing coronary and renal stent placement.
1996 Began performing MID-Cab surgery.
1997 Began Advanced Peripheral Vascular Interventional Hands-On Training Program.
1998 Began performing Off Pump (beating heart) Coronary Artery bypass surgery.
1998 Introduced the Ventricular Assist Device to Rockford.
2001 First Intravascular Brachytherapy procedure in Rockford performed.
2002 All digital cardiac catherization laboratory opens.
2002 Began research study to test the use of drug eluting stents.
2003 Drug eluting stents approved for general use by the Food and Drug Administration.
2004 Performed the first Transmyocardial Laser Revascularization, a new surgical procedure for inoperable coronary artery disease patients with angina, in Rockford.
